Recent advances in AI, with robotics, biochemistry, medicine, energy, and space travel close behind, have produced a growing "capability overhang": the latent usefulness of a technology extends well beyond its deployed capabilities. Concentrated compute turns this surplus toward root-node problems in science, the foundational challenges whose solutions unlock entire fields; venture capital turns it toward returns; a thinner slice reaches the public through open source. The general public captures least, because the resources that unlock the surplus are priced in tiers and access is usually a function of wealth or geographic location. The overhang exists for everyone in principle, but it is unevenly distributed. For the nations and citizens at the far end of that distribution, these advances are a threat to sovereignty more severe than any previous technology, even as the same tools carry enormous potential to improve their lives.
So far, these advances have done little for self-governance. Decisions about individual and community health, environment, and energy have shifted steadily toward institutions that hold the compute, capital, and data. As AI and adjacent technologies advance, state surveillance and military capability will grow with them, with pressure on civil liberties at home and abroad.
This progression will not slow, and no single actor can slow it. The debate over whether it should be slower is moot. Human society is chaotic and will remain so, and in a chaotic system no state persists on its own. Autonomy is a maintained state; it holds only under continuous work. The question is who holds the tools to do that work. Today they are concentrated in the hands of a few. Self-governance for individuals and communities will not emerge on its own. It must be built, intentionally, through social and technical effort.
To that end, our collective of students, professionals, and educators is announcing the formation of an independent, unincorporated research organization:
Autonome Research Labs
The focus of our teams is systems that can expand self-governance of data, research, energy, and local economies. Our initial goals include competitive successes in machine learning competitions, economic analysis, research tools, and open source software releases.
As the frontier continues to change, and the capability overhang shifts, Autonome will continue prioritizing sovereign work and thought. Our goal is to apply consistent scientific rigor to issues of autonomy in the age of rapid technological advancement. Success in competitive arenas of scientific research, engineering, and economic prediction serves as the prerequisite for any substantial impact on root-node problems of self-determination.
About the logo
The Autonome Research logo is a diagram of the Dzhanibekov effect, famously demonstrated aboard the Salyut 7 space station in 1985. A T-shaped object spun about its intermediate axis flips its orientation, with no external torque applied and no energy gained or lost. The reversal emerges entirely from the object's own geometry.
